What are the signs an investor has lost interest?
Updated October 30, 2026
The surest sign is that the next step disappears: no date, no partner meeting, no request for data. Replies get shorter and slower, and the praise gets vaguer, like “interesting, keep us posted”. An investor who is still interested keeps asking you for things.
The signs, and what they usually mean
Replies get shorter and slower
Quick, detailed answers after the first call, then one line every week or two. Interest is cooling.
“Keep us posted” instead of a date
Nothing gets scheduled. It is a pass for now, with the door left open.
The questions stop
An interested investor asks about your numbers, your customers and your round. When the questions stop, so did the work on your deal.
“Who else is in?” comes before anything else
They may still invest, but only behind someone who leads the round and sets the price. Find the lead first.
Still in: they ask you for something
Data room access, a customer call, a meeting with another partner, a date. Any of these means the deal is alive.
What to do next
- Name the last next step they actually agreed to. If you cannot name one, treat it as a pass for this round.
- Ask once, plainly: do they want to go further now, or should you come back after a specific milestone? A direct question is easier to answer than another polite nudge.
- Keep talking to other funds while you wait. A raise paused for one maybe loses weeks.
Hi Mark, I don't want to chase you. Is this something you'd like to take further now, or should I come back once we pass $30K MRR? We expect that in February.
